Supplementary benefit for pharmaceuticals
As from January 1, 2003 the Health Insurance Fund (HIF) shall additionally compensate for amounts paid by the insured for medicinal products during the calendar year, where such amounts are at least 384 EUR.
If the insured has made an own contribution between 384 EUR and 640 EUR during a calendar year, the Health Insurance Fund shall compensate for 50 % of the amount exceeding 384 EUR. If this own contribution is between 640 EUR and 1300 EUR, the Health Insurance Fund shall additionally compensate for 75 % of the amount exceeding 640 EUR. The Fund shall not additionally compensate for amounts beyond 1300 EUR.

The Health Insurance Fund makes the payments of this benefit four times a year: in January (for the previous calendar year), April, July and October.
In particular, the supplementary benefit for medicinal products helps to compensate the cost of pharmaceuticals for persons:
• whose treatment plans include expensive medicinal products;
• who suffer from chronic conditions and, consequently, need to use medicinal products for a long period of time;
• who have to use several medicinal products at a given time.
